How to Keep Your Room Clean

Posted on: August 25, 2011

After a stressful day, it is nice to be able to come home and relax in a neat, tidy room. If your room is messy and cluttered, it will just make you feel more stressed and tired. Of course, if you allow your room to get unbearably messy, you may just not feel like cleaning it up at all. The problem is, it will probably just get worse day by day. So what should you do? You can start with cleaning, but it doesn't just end there. If you do not learn how to keep your room clean, you are apt to have a disastrous room once again.

Introduction

To get started, you should first plan your steps down to the smallest detail. Ask yourself, "Will I have to move things around to improve the ambiance?" Make a note of everything that could cause your room to get messy, even unseen things such as the clothing in your drawers. Once you're done planning, set a particular date where you can devote a lot of time on cleaning the room.

Step 1: Set The Mood

You will enjoy cleaning more if you have a pleasant atmosphere to do it in. For example, sometimes when cleaning it's nice to hear music in the background. This will help you become amused with what you're doing. Your room should also be bright, so that you can easily see all the things you have to pick up, as well as all of the dust your room.

Step 2: Organize

It is easiest to start with the small things. Get a garbage bag, and pick up unnecessary and disposable items in your room. Important papers or other items which need to be kept should be placed neatly in a box, or wherever you store your files. Clothes lying on the floor or under the bed should be organized as well. Clean clothes should be folded properly and placed inside the cabinet, while dirty and used clothes should be placed in a laundry basket. Books and other reading materials should be placed on your bookshelves. Old magazines and newspapers can be recycled, so place them in another box. Be sure to get all of the scattered items around your bedroom.

Step 3: Dust

With an old rag, wipe every shelf, table, and even your window sill to remove dust. Use an anti-bacterial spray, such as Lysol. For wooden pieces, wipe with wood polishing sprays to keep them looking new and shiny. If your walls seem dirty with dust and spider webs, you should also wipe them with an old rag. Use a dry cloth for wiping small decorations and picture frames.

Step 4: Clean the Floor

Sweep your floor (you can even use rags). Use floor wax if it's applicable on your floor type. Another suggestion is to put scented oil on your rag. This will give the same shiny effect as wax on your floors, plus it will make your room smell fresh. If you have carpeted floors, vacuum. Using carpet deodorizing powder will also help in keeping it odor free. If it isn't available, you can use baking powder or cornstarch, for these will also absorb carpet odors.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

If you decided to move something, now's the time. Change your curtains, bed sheets and pillowcases, and put all of these used items into your laundry basket. Use some deodorizing room spray to make it smell good if you want. Check to make sure that everything is in the right place.

Step 6: Keep At It

Your room's cleanliness depends on you. Try not to be lazy, and be sure to clean as you go. If you can pick up a little dirt, or anything that's scattered on the floor, do it right away. If someone else uses your room, tell that person not to mess up your room or, better yet, to fix it up when he/she leaves.
